January 30th 2014, —Smith Marion & Co. employees Kendra Dockham and Roxanne Garcia are volunteering with the VITA Program at Cal State San Bernardino the weekends of January 25th and February 1st. VITA was founded in 1971, by Gary Iskawitz. The program offers free tax preparation to low income individuals and families, for non-English speakers, low-income elderly and the disabled.
The Cal State San Bernardino VITA site is primarily run by student volunteers; Dockham and Garcia will be supervising the students as they prepare for the program. VITA volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS prior to volunteering. Currently there are over 12,000 VITA locations and every year they provide over 100,000 free tax returns in communities all over the country.
